I was very pleased to work with Cologne-based BTF again after the five-part documentary series FC Hollywood. This time, we portrayed German football icon Lukas Podolski for Netflix – a fascinating project that looks at his career, his roots and his public persona from a fresh and revealing perspective.

From street footballer to World Champion, from the son of Polish immigrants to Cologne’s own “Prinz Poldi,” Lukas Podolski has left a lasting mark on German football. He became a national hero, but also remained one of the country’s most authentic and widely loved football figures. Even before the end of his playing career, he had already built a successful business world beyond the pitch.

The Netflix documentary shows new and personal sides of both the athlete and the man behind the public figure. It follows Podolski through what was meant to be the final season of his career – until everything changed.

Poldi will be available on Netflix from 4 June.
