Elf Helden – ein Albtraum (2026, NDR)
The new four-part sports documentary by BROADVIEW TV looks back at the German national team’s dramatic journey during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. I had the pleasure of supporting the project together with the team as Archive Producer.
Germany arrived as reigning world champions and one of the tournament favourites. With a squad full of major names and high expectations, the team seemed perfectly positioned for another successful World Cup campaign. But behind the scenes, tensions soon began to grow. Internal conflicts, media pressure and increasing criticism of coach Berti Vogts gradually destabilised what had once looked like a clear title mission.
Elf Helden – ein Albtraum traces the path of the German national team before and during the 1994 World Cup and shows how one of the strongest German squads of its era spectacularly fell apart. The series also places the tournament within the broader atmosphere of 1990s Germany – a country shaped by reunification, changing identities and a football culture under intense public scrutiny.
Featuring exclusive interviews with Berti Vogts, Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Effenberg, Bodo Illgner, Mario Basler, Matthias Sammer, Reinhold Beckmann, Gaby Papenburg, Marcel Reif and Bianca Illgner, the documentary tells the story of the 1994 World Cup from a distinctly German perspective.
The four-part series will be available in the ARD Mediathek from 2 June 2026 and will air as a 90-minute version on Das Erste on 14 June 2026.
