Die Steinkohle (2018, ARTE)

On this project I was one of three researchers digging deep for footage highlighting the connection we have to coal.

Story: On 21st of December 2018, Germany’s last stone coal mine will officially close with its last shift. This will mark the end of the era of coal mining in Western Europe. Reason enough to take a look at the turbulent times of stone coal mining.

Like no other material, stone coal stands for the industrial age. It is the fateful material of the „modern age“, the source of power and wealth but also of suffering and destruction, of economic and social development. On the occasion of the last colliery closure, the documentary „Die Steinkohle“ (Stone Coal) tells for the first time from a European perspective how stone coal has changed and shaped societies, people, times and landscapes forever.
