Ein Sommer in Italien – WM 1990 (2026, KINO, SKY, ZDF)

Another highly exciting football documentary that I had the pleasure of supporting as an Archive Producer.

Italy, summer 1990: Germany becomes football world champion for the third time and experiences one of the greatest peak moments in the nation’s sporting history. Under head coach Franz Beckenbauer, football icons such as Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler and Klaus Augenthaler rise far above themselves. The legendary duels with the Netherlands and Yugoslavia, the emotionally charged final victory against Argentina – unforgettable goosebump moments that remain deeply etched in Germany’s football memory to this day. Yet the 1990 World Cup was about far more than football. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, and shortly before German reunification, the celebrations of millions of people from East and West gave rise to a new sense of confidence. The summer of 1990 brought back a feeling of togetherness after decades of division – becoming a symbol of hope, a promise of unity and team spirit.

In A SUMMER IN ITALY – WORLD CUP 1990, the story of this tournament is told by the players themselves, exactly as they experienced it on and off the pitch. The film is brought to life with previously unreleased footage shot by goalkeeping coach and amateur filmmaker Sepp Maier, treasures from the FIFA archive, and private images from the squad. Up close, authentic, personal and full of emotion, this documentary feature film takes audiences back to that summer that enchanted Germany.
